Waivers

What are Waivers?

Waivers allow people with disabilities to live in their own homes rather than an institution (like a nursing home or hospital). They do this by providing services needed to support people in their homes, their workplaces, and in their communities.

For persons who have MN-MA, they may choose to complete a MN-CHOICE assessment.

The MN Choice assessment is completed by the lead agency for the county where you reside.

The MN Choice assessment will determine services you are eligible for, in terms of

  1. Types of caregivers.  Examples: PCA, homemaker, ILS, AHRMS.
  2. Caregiver hours.
  3. Waiver, PCA, or Alternate Care programs.

There are various MN Waivers.

Four are based on level of disability:

CADI (Community Access for Disability Inclusion). CAC (Community Alternative Care). BI (Brain injury). DD (Developmental disability).

The EW or Elderly Waiver is based on a person’s age. You may qualify if you are 65 or older.

Each waiver has budget allotments. You can request waiver funds to cover monthly supplies (eg incontinence products, nutritional supplements),  to cover specialty equipment costs,  to cover transportation vouchers,  and to cover home modifications.

There are no retroactive payments with the waiver programs. Your waiver must be active and you must request funds from your case manager before you make a purchase.
